THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

Laura LAURA:
While the truest way to experience this film is at a theater with an audience that's going to go through all the amusing rituals, I discovered the movie actually had a plot when I was able to hear it.  Tim Curry as Dr. Frankenfurter gives a classic performance - this movie was punk before the punk movement.

LOCAL HERO

Robin ROBIN:
This film, by Scottish director Bill Forsyth, is one of my very favorite films. It's a charming and whimsical movie
about an oil company executive played by Peter Riegert who is sent to buy a little Scottish town for oil refinery exploittion. It is full of humor and warmth.  If you do rent, I'd love to hear what you think of it.

SID AND NANCY

Laura LAURA:
Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb deserved oscar nominations for their performances in this film which is both blackly humorous and a tragic love story.  It's also an anti-drug statement with a great soundtrack.  I love this movie.

THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE

Robin ROBIN:
This film, with a dynamite performance by Laurence Harvey and with Frank Sinatra, deals with brainwashing, political intrigue and assisination. It may be a little dated, but I think it's well worth the time to watch.

SANTE SAGRE

Laura LAURA:
This is a strange film about a circus, religious fanatacism, dismemberment, and madness.  Although not for all tastes, I found it to be magnificent and think you will too, if you're adventurous and can take an NC-17 film.  My husband was dragged to it after I had described the storyline, and he was surprised how much he liked it - that right Robin?

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING

Robin ROBIN:
This John Huston adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling short story is a real treasure.  I've watched this movie a dozen times and love it more every time.  If you want to see a film that is reminiscent of the great spectacles of the 50's, this is it.

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

Laura LAURA:
This is my favorite horror film of all time.  Although that clip was a bit harsh, the film is no way near as gory as the title would suggest. This film is much more psychological and genuinely terrifying.  Artistically done, it includes black humor as well as some interesting societal statemtents and was entered into the American Film Archives as a film worth preserving.

THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY

Robin ROBIN:
This film, starring Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren, is about a gangster kingpin, Hoskins trying to pull off a massive land scam while running into major problems with the IRA.  This is a GOOD gangster film.

THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER

Laura LAURA:
My second favorite film of last year, this is another one not for all tastes; many people hated this film.  If found it to be an allegory of all that is beautiful and all that is vile, and the vile is strongly presented.  This is a harsh film, but if you can accept that, you may want to rent THE UNCUT version of the video.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

Robin ROBIN:
Rent this movie!  It is a thoroughly charming and funny movie with something for everyone.  It's a story of love, intrigue, revenge, and adventure, with swashbuckling sword fights, giants, monsters, magic and humor.  It's enertaining for the kids and for us big kids.

We hope you try our recommendations and let us know what you think of them and the show by emailing either myself or Laura. And remember, all of these movies are available to rent or but from this site from reel.com by clicking on the movies title on our Video page.
