Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes)

Hector (Karra Elejalde) is spending a weekend in the country with his girlfriend, Clara (Candela Fernandez). She heads off to town to buy them dinner while he plays with his binoculars. After Clara leaves, he spots a beautiful young woman (Barbara Noenaga) taking off her clothes in the woods. When he goes to investigate he finds the girl to be either dead or passed out. But, before he can help her, he is attacked and stabbed by a bandaged.assailant. He runs from his attacker and finds refuge in a nearby institute where a strange scientist (Nacho Vigalondo) hides him in an equally strange machine in “Timecrimes.”

This first-rate science fiction/mystery flick actually deals with the idea of time travel in an intelligent and thought provoking manner. First time feature writer/director Nacho Vigalondo’s time travel oeuvre put me in mind of the great Isaac Asimov novel, Ends of Eternity. This is a hard thing to do and he explores the concept of meeting yourself in time with a believable plot and frightening execution of the story. This near one-hander has Hector witnessing strangeness that envelops him in a run for his very life as he tries to outwit his bandaged attacker. The use of time travel is handled so well, I do not want give away any of the story twists and turns. “Timecrimes” handles the paradox of traveling in time with intelligence and combines it with a solid thriller/mystery story. Science fiction fans, especially us time travel nuts, will love dissecting the story logic.
