Breaking In

A wealthy man leaves his luxury apartment to go for a run, only to be hit by a car and killed. Later, his daughter, Shaun (Gabrielle Union), and her two kids, Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) and Glover (Seth Carr), head to his vacation home to arrange its sale. But, when they arrive, things are not quite how they should be in “Breaking In.”

Happy Mothers’ Day! Director James McTeigue and writer Ryan Engle, with star/producer Gabrielle Union, bring us their unusual homage to all the moms out there. Shaun, as she goes about closing the property and waiting for the realtor to sign the final sale papers, begins noticing some things strangely amiss. Next thing she knows, four men with malicious intent are in the house and she is in a fight to save herself and her children. This is not an original concept and I have seen this “mom must fight for her kids” story before, many times. Still, if you put aside the usual discrepancies in this kind of thriller – for example, it is set up early on in the home invasion that the bad guys are looking for a safe and they have just 90 minutes to find it, break it open and abscond with much money before the law arrives, then they do everything but look for the safe for 30 minutes – “Breaking In” is fair entertainment. I just do not think many moms will celebrate their special day seeing it.
